The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is available for international students who want to study for their PhD in Hong Kong, China. It was set up in 2009 by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) to attract talented students from around the world to pursue their PhD studies at universities in Hong Kong.
The fellowship offers the following benefits:
- A yearly stipend of HK$325,200 (about US$41,690)
- A travel allowance for conferences and research of HK$13,600 (about US$1,740) each year
- The fellowship is available for up to three years
For the 2023/24 academic year, 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded.

Scholarship Coverage
The Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme for International Students offers the following benefits:
- An annual stipend of HK$325,200 (approximately US$41,690)
- A conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,600 (approximately US$1,740) per year for up to three years
- There is no application fee for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), though universities may charge application or processing fees
Note:
- 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2023/24 academic year

Eligibility Criteria for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme
To be eligible for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme for International Students, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Required Language: English
- Eligible Countries: All countries around the world
- Applicants must be seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions in Hong Kong, regardless of their country of origin, prior work experience, or ethnic background
- Applicants should show strong academic performance, research potential, communication and interpersonal skills, and leadership abilities.
