Government of Slovak Republic National Scholarship Program 2025

Applications for the National Scholarship Program (NSP) of the Slovak Republic are currently open. In this article, we will explain in detail about this scholarship program, its benefits, and the step-by-step application process.

The National Scholarship Program of the Slovak Republic for 2025-2026 offers fully funded scholarships for international students. These scholarships are available for master’s and PhD studies. The scholarship provides up to 1,025 € per month.

The Slovak Government approved the establishment of the National Scholarship Programme in 2005 to support the mobility of students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers, and artists. The program is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Sport of the Slovak Republic.

The NSP aims to support the mobility of international students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers, and artists for scholarship stays at higher education institutions and research organizations in Slovakia.

Scholarship Coverage

The National Scholarship Program will provide recipients with the following benefits:

  • The scholarship is designed to cover the living costs of international scholarship holders, including expenses related to staying in Slovakia (food, accommodation, etc.) during their study, research, artistic, or teaching stay at universities and research organizations in Slovakia.
  • The scholarship holder can seek assistance from their host institution regarding accommodation and formalities related to entering and staying in the Slovak Republic, or they can handle these necessities independently.

Amount of the Monthly Scholarship
The monthly scholarship can be up to 1,025 € depending on the program and applicant’s specific circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria for National Scholarship Program of the Slovak Republic

To qualify for the National Scholarship Program, candidates must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Required Language(s): English
  • Eligible Countries: All countries worldwide
  • Eligible Students:
    • University students at universities outside Slovakia
    • Students of the second level of higher education (master’s students) or students who have completed at least 2.5 years of their university studies in the same study program by the application deadline
    • Students who will be on a study stay in Slovakia during their higher education outside Slovakia and who have been accepted by a public, private, or state university in Slovakia for academic mobility
    • PhD students whose higher education or scientific training takes place outside Slovakia and who have been accepted by a public, private, or state university or research institution in Slovakia for academic mobility to study, conduct research, or carry out an artistic stay

The National Scholarship Programme does not support:

  • International students and PhD students accepted for full higher education (bachelor, master, or doctoral studies) in Slovakia, or those already studying in Slovakia (full higher education) who want to fund their studies in Slovakia through the NSP
  • International applicants who have spent 12 or more months in the Slovak Republic within the 36 months prior to the application deadline
  • International applicants who are receiving a scholarship in Slovakia through other public-funded scholarship programs (e.g., International Visegrad Fund, Erasmus+, CEEPUS, bilateral agreements, etc.)

How to Apply for National Scholarship Program

Please follow the following application instructions to apply for National Scholarship Program:

First Step:

  • Applicants must fill in their online applications and upload all the required attachments in required format to their online application.
  • Applicants are allowed to submit (fill in) applications and the required attachments in Slovak or English language only (documents written in other languages must be officially translated into Slovak or English language – translation can be certified by the same institution that issued the respective document).
  • In case of documents, that are attached to the application and that are issued by a person other than the applicant (e.g. recommendation letters, confirmations of study, diploma/diploma supplement/state examination certificate, admission/invitation letter) it is necessary to upload the scan of these documents to the online application. The applicant is obliged to keep and archive all originals of documents that he/she has attached to the online application in electronic format, and if requested, to submit these originals (or certified copies of these originals) to the programme administrator.

Second Step:

  • Once the application is filled in and all the required documents are attached to the application, the applicant must submit the application by clicking the “SEND” button.  It is also necessary to deliver original of the admission/invitation letter to SAIA, n. o., in Bratislava (SAIA, n. o., Sasinkova 10, 812 20 Bratislava 1). 
  • This document must be delivered at latest on the 3rd working day after the application deadline until 12 p.m. (when determining the working days, legal status in Slovakia is taken into consideration).
