The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program is open to international students who want to advance their skills as future leaders in business reporting. Launched in March 2017, the Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program offers a transformative learning environment for up-and-coming reporters from around the world, regardless of the type of press they work in. The program is designed to shape the next generation of business reporting professionals.
The program will be held on the Hyde Park campus over approximately 12 weeks. During this time, selected participants will audit classes, attend events, collaborate with peers, and interact with top scholars from the university. Participants at Chicago Booth will have the freedom to choose their own courses. Examples of available courses include The Firm and the Non-Market Environment by Professor Marianne Bertrand and Professor Luigi Zingales, and Crony Capitalism.
Program participants are expected to:
- Audit three classes
- Actively participate in classes, completing all required readings and assignments
- Attend and participate in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events, as well as other events recommended by the center
- Sign a letter of agreement with the center to confirm mutual understanding of the program guidelines and expectations

Scholarship Coverage
The Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program provides the following benefits to recipients:
- Reimbursement for economy-class airfare to/from Chicago, as well as SEVIS and visa application fees
- A stipend of $12,000 to cover living expenses during the 12-week program
- Training in business fundamentals at Chicago Booth
- Participation in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and across the university
- An opportunity to write for the ProMarket publication
- Opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow program participants
- A designated study space
- A certificate of participation upon successful completion of the program
Note: The stipend is subject to tax withholding of up to 14% for international participants. Please check your country’s tax treaty with the United States for more information.

To apply for the Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program, please follow these steps:
- Submit the following documents through the online application:
- Resume/CV
- Three published news articles:
- Submit copies of three published news articles, preferably in English. If the articles are not in English, include a translation alongside the original articles.
- For TV or radio journalists, provide links to your video/audio files in a PDF or Word document along with English transcriptions.
- Personal essays (500 words max):
- Describe your interest in the program and your goals.
- Share your experience and interest in the field of economics and political economy, and what you hope to learn.
- Two letters of recommendation
- Proof of English proficiency (if applicable):
- Non-native English speakers must provide proof of English proficiency unless their undergraduate or graduate degree was obtained in a college/university where English is the primary language of instruction or in an English-speaking country.
- Acceptable proof includes standardized test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, Cambridge, Duolingo), English equivalency diploma, or a letter from an employer confirming English proficiency.
